What is Measles?
Measles is a highly contagious viral disease spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can lead to serious complications, particularly in young children and individuals with weakened immune systems. Up to 90% of unvaccinated people exposed to measles will become infected.
Common Symptoms of Measles
Common symptoms appear 7 to 14 days after exposure and include:
- High fever (can exceed 104°F)
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Red, watery eyes
- Rash that spreads over the body
How does Measles Spread?
Measles is transmitted through respiratory droplets and can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person has left the area.
How to Protect Yourself
Vaccination is the best defense against measles. The MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) is safe, effective, and widely recommended.
