Frequently Asked Questions
A vasectomy is a permanent contraceptive method for people with testicles. It is 99% effective in preventing unwanted pregnancies.
The procedure is done at a PHC clinic in Missoula, MT and takes about 45 minutes.
You get to go home afterwards.
The doctor will use a local anesthetic for pain control, and will perform the procedure using the “No Scalpel Vasectomy Technique” through a small opening in the scrotum to locate the vas deferens. The vas deferens are cut and sealed. For most patients, the small opening in the scrotum heals without needing stitches.
After the procedure, there still might be some sperm in the ducts that can last up to three months, which is why we recommend using another contraceptive method until we confirm that there aren’t any sperm in your semen 2-3 months after the procedure. This is done by providing a semen sample that the doctor studies under a microscope.
There might be some discomfort in the area for 1-2 days, and it’s recommended you rest. You can return to your normal activities after 1-2 days.
Importantly:
- There are NO changes in erections
- There are NO changes in ejaculations
- There are NO changes in libido
- Vasectomies do not reduce orgasms
Compared to procedures often performed on peopl ewith ovaries, a vasectomy is:
- Far less expensive
- Equally effective (about 99%)
- Less invasive with an easier recovery
- Safer with less chance of adverse outcomes
